What is SEO?

Definition

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a popular term these days, but what does it actually mean? SEO is the process of making your website user friendly and also search engine friendly through different technical factors.  These factors include headings, meta descriptions, domain visibility, domain name, URL length, and site or page speed. It also includes things like keyword research, competitor research, and content marketing. 

The bottom line for SEO is that you want to organically rank well. This means you want to show up on the first page of Google for certain keywords that you determine are relevant for your business. For example, if you sell books about love in Portland, OR then you might want to organically rank well for the long tail keyword “where to find books about love in Portland” or “best books about love”. Keep in mind that SEO can encompass many different aspects of your business which is why it is becoming more and more important. 

Who is SEO For: Bots vs. Humans

There are so many technical factors associated with SEO that it is easy to forget that the end user is who you are truly creating your experience for. In the words of Wendy Piersall, “Google only loves you when everyone else loves you first.” These are words to live by! When creating your website and practicing your SEO it’s vital to create a positive and easy user experience. If you do that then you will naturally rank well. 

Why is SEO Important?

As I mentioned before SEO is about creating a better user experience. That in and of itself should be enough reason to perform SEO. You should absolutely want to give your customers the best user experience possible. However, if you need more convincing here are a few more factors that make SEO so important. 

Organic Ranking

Ranking organically is the top reason to perform SEO on your website. You want to be found when people search for terms related to your business- just like in our bookstore example. Ultimately, the more people that find you organically, the more traffic you will have to add to your sales funnel. More visitors to your website means more views for your product or service. 

More Sales/Better ROI

The more visitors that you attract to your website through organic traffic the more opportunities you have to get leads or sales. Then, you have more opportunity to lead people through your sales funnel (example below) and actually make the sales you need to run a successful business. Also, because SEO is all about organic ranking (read: free) these leads or sales can have a great return on investment (ROI) making SEO low-risk and high-reward.
